Equivalences between the British and Spanish systems

Choosing the right school is an important decision, and even more so when it comes to an education system that we are not fully familiar with. At Numont School we know that many Spanish parents have doubts about how British education is structured and how it compares to Spanish education. That is why we have prepared this clear and visual guide on the equivalence between the British and Spanish systems, so that you can easily find out which grade corresponds to your child according to their age.

🟠 1. Why is it important to know the equivalences?

When a family considers changing education systems, one of the first questions that arises is:

“What grade would my child get?”

The British education system is structured differently from the Spanish one, and that can be confusing at first. But once you understand the age and stage logic, everything falls into place.

🟢 Table of equivalences between systems

In the British system, courses are named from “Reception” to “Year 13”, and are grouped by stages called Key Stages.
In the following infographic you will see clearly:

  • Student’s age

  • The name of the course in the UK and Spain

  • To which educational stage do you belong

Here we show you a clear table with the equivalence between the British and Spanish education systems.

🔵 Key differences between the two systems

  • Beginning of the course: In the United Kingdom it begins in September, as in Spain.

  • Change of stage: In the British system, secondary education begins one year earlier, in Year 7 (11 years old), while in Spain it is in the 1st year of ESO (12 years old).

  • Assessments: In the UK students take SATs at the end of Year 6 and other internal assessments, but there are no compulsory re-assessments.

  • Foreign languages: They are introduced earlier and with a more practical approach.

🟣 4. And how do we manage this at Numont?

At Numont School we have experience accompanying families coming from very different backgrounds: Spanish, American, French, German or even international.

We always value:

  • Student’s age

  • Maturity level

  • Previous knowledge

  • Language

This ensures that each student is placed in the most appropriate course for his or her academic and emotional development.
