Managing emotions in children is just as important as academic learning. Helping kids recognise, name and work through their feelings is a key part of growing up. Learning to recognise, name and manage those feelings is a skill that supports their well-being for life.

🏡 At Home: Practical Strategies for Managing Emotions in Children

Children don’t naturally know how to regulate their emotions—they learn by observing. Here are some practical ways to support them at home:

✅ 1. Name the emotion

Use simple phrases like: “It seems like you’re frustrated” or “You look really happy today.”

✅ 2. Validate what they feel

Avoid phrases like “don’t cry” or “you’re overreacting.” Instead, say: “I can see that this hurt” or “It’s okay to feel sad sometimes.”

✅ 3. Use stories or films

After reading or watching something together, ask: “How do you think that character felt? Why?”

✅ 4. Create a calming corner

A cosy space with cushions, books or drawings where they can go when they need a moment to settle.

✅ 5. Breathe together

Teach deep breathing: in through the nose for 3 seconds, out through the mouth for 4. Practise when things are calm.

✅ 6. Talk about your own emotions

Be a role model: “I’m a bit nervous about this meeting, but I know it will pass.”

✅ 7. Play “What emotion is it?”

Make faces or act out feelings and guess them together—a fun way to learn emotional cues.

✅ 8. Draw feelings

Encourage your child to draw how they feel. Shapes, colours and facial expressions often say more than words.

✅ 9. Use an emotion journal

A notebook where they can write or draw how they felt each day—and why.

✅ 10. Listen without rushing

Put down the phone, look them in the eye, and really listen. Sometimes, that’s all they need.
