When students in the British system reach Year 6 (equivalent to 5th grade in Spain), they face an important milestone: the Key Stage 2 SATs. While the word “exam” might sound intimidating, learning how to prepare SATs Year 6 in a calm and confident way can make all the difference.
At Numont School, we support our students throughout the process without pressure, always remembering that every child is much more than just a score.
🎯 What are SATs and how to prepare in Year 6
SATs (Standard Assessment Tests) are national assessments taken at the end of Key Stage 2—typically in May of Year 6, when students are around 10 or 11 years old.
The goals of the SATs are to:
- Measure understanding in key academic subjects
- Provide useful feedback to the school, families, and students
- Offer a reference point for the next stage of learning
They are not pass-or-fail exams, and they do not determine a child’s academic future.
📚 Subjects covered in Year 6 SATs
Year 6 SATs include three main areas:
English: Reading Comprehension
Evaluates the ability to understand, interpret and respond to written texts accurately.
English: Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (SPaG)
Includes a multiple-choice grammar test and a short spelling task.
Mathematics
Divided into three papers:
- Arithmetic (basic calculations)
- Reasoning 1
- Reasoning 2
❓ SATs results in Year 6: what to expect
- Results are shared with schools and families
- They help inform planning for the next stage: Key Stage 3
- They do not affect access to secondary school and are not final academic grades
At Numont, we always remind our students and families that these results do not define a child. They are just one part of a much bigger picture of learning and growth.
