🧠 A Current Debate in Education
The responsible use of technology in the classroom has become a central topic in modern education. While some schools have fully integrated digital devices across all levels, others, like the Community of Madrid, have chosen to limit their use in early education. Starting from the 2025/26 academic year, the individual use of digital devices will be eliminated in public and publicly funded schools for Early Childhood and Primary Education. Shared and supervised use will be permitted for a maximum of two hours per week .
🎓 Numont’s Philosophy: Balance and Common Sense
At Numont School, we believe that the responsible use of technology in the classroom is essential for our students’ overall development. Our approach combines traditional teaching methods with digital tools, ensuring that technology complements rather than replaces fundamental educational practices.
🖥️ How Technology Is Integrated at Numont
-
ICT Curriculum: Starting from Year 2, students engage in ICT (Information and Communication Technology) classes in a dedicated computer lab.
-
Project-Based Use: Beyond ICT classes, students occasionally use technology for group research or specific assignments, always under teacher supervision.
-
Personal Device Policy: To promote focus and respect in the classroom, personal mobile devices are not permitted during school hours. Students who bring phones or smartwatches leave them at the entrance at the start of the day.
✅ Advantages of This Balanced Approach
-
Development of Fundamental Skills: By prioritizing traditional methods, students enhance skills like handwriting, reading comprehension, and social interaction.
-
Preparation for the Digital World: Through ICT classes and supervised technology use, students acquire essential digital competencies, learning to use technological tools critically and responsibly.
-
Reduced Screen Overexposure: Limiting device use minimizes risks associated with excessive screen time, aligning with recommendations from child health experts.
📚 Benefits of Limiting Technology Use in the Classroom
Implementing responsible use of technology in the classroom also involves recognizing the advantages of limiting its presence:
-
Improved Attention and Concentration: Reducing digital distractions allows students to better focus on school tasks and activities.
-
Enhanced Creativity: Relying less on electronic devices encourages students to develop their imagination and creative skills through traditional methods.
-
Development of Social Skills: Face-to-face interaction is promoted, fostering empathy and effective communication among peers.
🧭 Conclusion: Preparing Students for the Future
At Numont School, our commitment is to provide an education that combines the best of both worlds: the strength of traditional methods and the advantages of modern technology. We believe this balance is key to preparing our students for future challenges, supporting both their academic and personal growth.
