🪅 Celebrating San Isidro at Numont: Tradition, Joy and Chocolate with Churros

At Numont School, we love sharing local traditions with our students. That’s why celebrating San Isidro at school is such a special moment for our community — a chance to enjoy Madrid’s culture through fun, food and festivity.

🌆 What is San Isidro?

San Isidro Labrador is the patron saint of Madrid, and his feast day is celebrated every year on May 15th. Over several days, the city comes alive with traditional music, dancing, food stalls, local fairs and family-friendly events. Parks and iconic spots like La Pradera de San Isidro, Las Vistillas, and El Retiro host open-air concerts, parades and markets full of color and energy.

Children and adults dress in traditional outfits: chulapas and chulapos. Girls wear polka-dot dresses, shawls and flowers in their hair, while boys wear waistcoats, flat caps and carnations on their shirts. And of course, no San Isidro is complete without a typical Madrid treat: chocolate with churros!

🎉 A special day at Numont School

To mark the occasion, Numont filled with excitement as students of all ages arrived in their traditional San Isidro outfits. From our youngest in Early Years to the oldest in Primary, everyone looked wonderful in their chulapo and chulapa costumes.

Throughout the morning, children learned about the meaning behind the celebration, took part in themed activities, and had the chance to dance, play, and simply enjoy being together. Some classes even tried a few traditional Madrid steps!

The highlight for many? Sharing a delicious hot chocolate with churros with their classmates and teachers. A sweet moment to remember.

🤝 More than a tradition — a moment to connect

Celebrations like San Isidro are much more than just costumes and treats. They help our students feel part of their local community and learn to appreciate cultural traditions — whether it’s their own or someone else’s.

For our international families, it’s also a beautiful opportunity to discover a little piece of Madrid’s identity and to see their children immerse themselves in local customs.

At Numont, we believe that education is also about experiences — and days like this remind us why we’re proud to be part of such a joyful and close-knit school community.

San Isidro has certainly earned its place as one of the most joyful moments of our school year!
