Curriculum

A complete education

At Numont School we follow the national curriculum in all subjects, with special emphasis on English, mathematics and science. History and geography are adapted to the needs of an international student body such as ours.

ENGLISH

We use a variety of teaching and learning styles in English classes, drawing on different elements of best practice from the British National Curriculum.

Students have the opportunity to use a wide range of texts and resources, such as dictionaries, thesauri and word banks, to support their work. They use computers in English classes both to improve their learning and to write their papers. And they use multimedia resources to study how words and images combine to convey meaning.

MATH

At Numont, math skills are developed through interesting and stimulating activities in line with the national curriculum.

Our main objective is to develop children’s understanding of mathematical skills and concepts along with the ability to apply them. Children have the opportunity to use a wide range of resources such as number lines, number squares, digit cards or computing to support their work.

ART

At Numont School we value art because it contributes to the integral development of the child emotionally, aesthetically, intellectually and socially. It provides children with a unique way of perceiving themselves and the world, which is not taught in other parts of the curriculum and is essential for basic education.

In art classes we try to ensure that children learn a variety of skills and develop new experiences in the use of different materials, resources and equipment.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

At Numont we teach a variety of sports and activities from Kindergarten to Year 6, as prescribed by the British curriculum. Our goal is to teach children skills, resilience and confidence to successfully participate in competitive and non-competitive sports.

In the early years, they learn basic skills with small devices such as balls, hoops, vehicles, tunnels, playhouses, jump ropes, mats, etc. Starting in the fourth grade, children can represent the school in interscholastic competitions in soccer, rugby tag, cross country, basketball and track and field.

MUSIC

Music is a very important activity at Numont. Nursery, Reception and Year 1 students receive a daily music lesson that includes singing, rhythm, movement and percussion. And older children learn to read notes as well as write and interpret rhythmic patterns as they grow older.

Key Stage 1 does a play in the spring term and Key Stage 2 does a play or pantomime in the fall term. These plays are performed in a local theater. All classes, from Nursery to Year 6, have an assembly in the school hall each term, which parents are invited to attend.

LANGUAGES

Spanish is taught from the first year by a native teacher. Children arriving for the first time in Spain are given parallel classes at a beginner’s level. In the sixth grade, students are expected to be able to converse fluently and read and write fluently in Spanish.

French is also taught from the first to the ninth grade by a native teacher following the French National Curriculum Guidelines.

GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY

The aim of history classes is to stimulate children’s curiosity about the past, develop chronological understanding and help them understand and be informed about events, people and changes in both the recent and more distant past in their own area and in other parts of the world.

Children are taught to learn about change and continuity. And to analyze and interpret history from a political, social and cultural angle, with historical evidence and visits to places of historical and geographical importance.

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

In Design and Technology (DT) children learn to become critical analysts of past and present products and systems that surround them in everyday life.
Here they develop knowledge and understanding of the design and manufacturing skills they need to design and manufacture their own products.

To this end, they learn how to use tools and materials safely and appropriately. And they are encouraged to experiment and develop their own ideas, being critical and analytical of their own and others’ designs and products. Identifying weaknesses and strengths and suggesting ways forward.

EXCURSIONS

School field trips are a valuable part of a child’s education and are organized to complement the breadth of the curriculum. To develop children’s knowledge, skills and understanding of the outside world. And put into practice the skills learned in the classroom.

In Numont, children go on a wide variety of excursions ranging from visits to museums (natural history, costume, railroad, archeological, and various art museums, among others), to visits to farms, zoos, theme parks, historic buildings, as well as attending specialized workshops that are both educational and fun.
