The oldest British elementary school in Madrid

Do you know the history of Numont School?

Founded in 1962 by Margaret Ann Swanson, Numont School was born as a small British school in a quiet area in the northwest of Madrid, on Jarama Street.

In 1971, it moved to its current location at 16 Parma Street in Madrid.

It was originally created only for the children of expatriates of other nationalities, so that they could receive a British education without the need to attend boarding school. For this reason, Spanish students were not accepted.

In 1997, the school applied to the Spanish Ministry of Education for a license to admit Spanish students. This was a significant change, as the College was forced to include many more hours per week of certain Spanish subjects in the curriculum.

Since then, the Numont school, which has always had a high percentage of non-Spanish students, has become predominantly Spanish, between 50% and 70% in the last 10 years.

In 2009, Sarah Anne Swanson, daughter of our founder, took the reins of the School and promoted Secondary Education at the Center so that our beloved students could continue their learning with us.

The number of children attending Numont School has also gradually increased over the years, resulting in an expansion program that includes two new buildings on the main site (housing 4 additional classrooms) and a separate building 100 meters away from the main building housing 3 more classrooms.

Class sizes vary from a minimum of 10 children to a maximum of 17 children per class. This year, we are averaging 13 children per class.

All teachers are native English speakers and have British teaching qualifications. In addition, there are teachers specializing in Spanish, French, music, physical education, computer science and special needs.

The school follows the British curriculum and the teaching staff keeps up to date with all educational developments taking place in the UK.

Today, Numont School has students from 42 countries, making it one of the most international schools in Spain.
Because we believe that learning in a multicultural environment provides children with an enriching and stimulating vision that fosters tolerance and understanding.

Our motto: "I am. I can. I ought. I will."

More than 60 years ago, Mrs. Swanson chose this motto for Numont which remains today the guiding principle of our aspirations for the students of the College.

  • “I am “refers to students’ knowledge and understanding of themselves.
  • I can “means that our students are aware that they have or can develop the ability to do what they are supposed to do.
  • I ought”means that our students have a moral obligation to work to the best of their ability.
  • “I will “refers to the determination and resilience to overcome obstacles to achieve your goals.
